History teacher Andrew Lopez said, “I did not vote this election. I generally don’t vote unless it is a presidential election. I thought Gov. Cuomo was going to win anyway, because New York usually goes Democrat.”

Cuomo has been known for various accomplishments around New York like legalizing same-sex marriage, tightening gun laws, and the reconstruction of New York’s tax code. He also is trying to grow the tourism industry and is developing methods for a cleaner New York.

Astorino, his conservative opponent, wanted to repeal the strict gun laws and was against the common core program, which sets standards for English and math in public school. Cuomo on the other hand thinks it’s a great way to set a standard for public education.

In a recent interview, Cuomo said that in New York the more you pay for schools the better education you get. He is an advocate for charter schools and pushes for New Yorkers to have the best education. (The Washington Post)

In response to this statement, Lopez  said, “People that don’t pay for private schools are at a disadvantage. I taught public school in Harlem and the South Bronx, and Masters has a much better education than them. But I don’t think money is the only factor, parental education, home environment, peer group and school culture play a role in it as well.”

With Cuomo focusing a large amount of his attention on private and charter schools, Masters could be impacted greatly in terms of schooling laws and overall education of the state.
