Boys varsity basketball won a tight contest that went into double overtime against rival Greens Farms Academy (GFA) on January 13. Mike Jurzynski also scored his 1000th point in a 74-70 victory.

The game started quietly, with the teams trading scores back and forth. The score was 10-10, when Mike Jurzynski scored his thousandth point to give the Panthers a 12-10 lead. There was a brief timeout to recognize his accomplishment.

Just before halftime, Masters seemed to have a comfortable 37-28 lead. Brandon Randolph almost made a three-point shot that would have given the Panthers a 12-point lead. Then GFA made a three-pointer right before the clock ran out to make the score 37-31.

Greens Farms continued their momentum once the game resumed after halftime. Early in the second half, the game was tied 39-39. From there, GFA went on a 13-2 run and took an 11-point lead at 52-41. Panther fans were stunned to see such a quick shift from a 37-28 lead right before halftime to a 52-41 deficit in the second half. The crowd seemed nervous because it was starting to look like Masters might not make it back from this disadvantage.

With scoring by Max Ishmael, Chris Childs, Brandon Randolph and Mike Jurzynski, Masters went on a 14-5 comeback run to make the score 57-55. Greens Farms hit a three-point shot and opened up a five-point lead with under two minutes left in the game. Brandon Randolph made a three-point shot and Chris Childs scored a layup to tie the game again at 60-60 and send it into overtime.

The Panthers took a five-point lead in overtime, 67-62. After a layup by GFA to make the score 67-64, GFA hit a three-pointer with less than 10 seconds left. The score was 67-67 when the buzzer rang for the second time, signifying double overtime, and the large crowd was astounded.

With a three-point deficit in double overtime things began to look dire for the Panthers. At that point Mike Jurzynski scored a three-pointer to tie the game at 70. The crowd was ecstatic. When GFA was trying to score all that could be heard was “DEFENSE, DEFENSE” shouted in unison by the fans, inspiring the players. Brandon Randolph scored a jump shot and then two free throws for a 74-70 Panthers win.
