My Daily Dose of Awkward
January 31, 2015
I find it extremely hard to go a day without doing anything awkward or embarrassing. Of course, I don’t choose to be awkward but I guess it is something that I cannot control. Recently, I have had a lot of time to do nothing and at times like this my brain decides to remember some awkward interactions that I have had (to torture me, I guess). A certain incident especially makes me cringe so I want to share it with you. When I was a freshman, I used to go shopping at department stores so that I can find clothes for cheaper prices. However, the problem with these stores is that everything is a mess and there are huge piles that you need to sort through. One day I was looking for a good winter jacket for myself and I saw a rack of jackets far away. Another girl around my age was already looking through the jackets and I saw a very nice coat on top of the rack. It wasn’t hung on the rack as the other jackets but I thought of this as something normal because the store was always a complete mess. My only worry was that the girl standing there might take the jacket before I did; so out of nowhere I felt really competitive and ran towards the jacket and grabbed it quickly. I was very happy that I got it before her and was secretly celebrating my victory. Wearing the jacket, I was looking at myself in the mirror when the girl came up to me and said “Uh, excuse me, but that is my jacket”. I hadn’t realized that there was no price tag on this jacket because I was too busy “racing” with this girl. When she said this I just smiled at her and gave her the jacket back without saying anything (why Aslı why…) and ran away. Now I always make sure that the clothes I am trying on are actually for sale.
