Thinking Diversely about Diversity Day

“I think that when we think about [diversity], we don’t always think diversely about diversity, in a way. We think about race, socioeconomic background, things like that, and there are a lot of aspects that we don’t think about. Or that we decide that someone is not diverse or that something is not diverse very arbitrarily, especially on how people look. I think Diversity Day is doing a lot to stop that, but there are a lot of issues that it is not addressing which is kind of the nature of having one day where we talk about things like that.

And I also hope that it doesn’t mean that, just because there’s a Mother’s Day doesn’t mean you should be nice to your mother on that day only. Just because there is a Diversity Day, I hope that does not mean that we can decide that we can check that off and say, ‘We are diverse, we have done Diversity Day. That is the end of the discussion.’ Because I think we might have done that with [last year’s] water issue. We kind of moved on.”
