The cast launched into its first song “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd” and received roaring applause from the packed audience of friends and family. Full of harmonies and the dark and ominous tones of the villainous song, this opener brought the audience into the world of villains.
Last weekend, in the Experimental Theater, the cast of the Revue performed their show entitled “Our Villain Era”.
Songs from 17 different musicals were showcased to a full crowd each night. With multiple solo songs, four small group numbers and two full cast numbers, the review truly showcased each person’s voice.
Following the opening song, the remaining numbers – solos and small groups – brought out their evil sides while also allowing the audience to empathize with their characters. After the cast’s invited dress rehearsal the cast of the revue met with the Masters cast of Pippin to talk about their experiences cultivating their respective characters. They explained that they were trying to build their stories from outside of the musicals from which they came. Instead, they found ways to build their stories by personally relating to the characters they played.
The packed audience showed their appreciation through whoops and cheers after each song.
