The buildup that Prom brings every year is always greater than prom night itself. The pressures of promposal are being felt throughout campus, left and right young girls are on edge on who will ask and if they will even be ask. This year, the chilly weathy did not stop the first promposal, which happened the first week of April, when senior Royal Peoples asked junior Ria Thakurani. Promposal season raises the question of why there is so much pressure around asking someone to prom and specifically why it is assumed that a guy must as a girl and not vise versa.

The pressures surrounding promposals is a common topic of discussion because there are so many opinions on them. Senior Max Ishmael said, “If a girl asked me, I think it shows she has a lot of courage because it’s not the norm.” He added, “Everyone expects the guys to ask.”

Thakurani said, “I think a girl can ask a guy, but because of society’s views on what is normal. Often the same girls that praise feminism are the same ones waiting on guys to ask, when asking a guy would be a perfect display of equality.”

Adding to the pressures, planning out a creative promposal requires other trustworthy people that can keep the secret and help set up as well. Senior Gerson Borrero laughed and said, “They take a lot of effort, but they are nice gestures if they turn out right.”

Promposals become less stressful when there are others around eager to help. Khyle Richards-Corke said, “I didn’t feel as stressed out to plan my promposal because my friends, like Treasure, helped set it up with me.”

Promposals are also assumed to be over the top, but that is not always the case. Thakurani said, “The guy or girl promposing should know the person they are asking well enough to know how big or small they would like their promposal to be, and whether they even want one.”

Here are pictures of promposals so far.
