Meet your new MISH co-chairs for 2015-2016, Matthew Yarnall and Gabriella Bavaro and vice MISH co-chairs Boya Zhu and Henry Littlewood. In addition meet your new school co-chairs Timothy Kaplowitz and Annie Canning.

Henry Littlewood is from London but currently resides in the states. Among his credentials, he has plenty of experience in community service. His brother has autism and as a result he has worked with numerous autism services and was the MISH co-chair in freshman year. He is also a lead runner in the cross-country team.

Littlewood said, “I want to make MISH become less of a requirement and more of a fun and meaningful part of Masters. I also want to make it a more school-wide program. An example of this is a color run that Gabby [Bavaro] and I thought that would allow athletes to run for a certain cause, with help from the art department for paint and the music department for entertainment. Doing this will allow MISH to become more popular and efficient.”

Matthew Yarnall has done theatrical shows at Masters and most recently performed in a one-act play. He has also captained Math competitions a couple times at the school such as the HiMCM (a 36 hour math modeling competition), and has been on the math modeling team for all his time at Masters. He has been on the fencing team for the last three years. He was also the MISH representative of his freshman and junior class.

Yarnall said, “I always have loved community service especially at Masters. I feel that as the years progressed I have gained a great amount of leadership skills in MISH and hope to bring change to this school. What I have seen a-lot is people want many things done in MISH but paperwork usually gets bogged down. I hope to expedite this process to allow more service projects to come to Masters.”

This is Gabby Bavaro’s first year at Masters. She often is recognized by her participation in cross-country and the multiple times she sang at morning meeting.

Bavaro said, “I feel like we need more school collaboration in MISH projects, similar to how Great Gig has had participation from the music department, drama department, art department, and even some clubs (like Dohters). Making it a large, collaborative effort like Great Gig would excite people to do it and make MISH projects more effective.”

Boya Zhu is from China and will bring an international flair to MISH, something we haven’t seen in a while.

Zhu said, “I want to bring more activities to programs for children next year. I used to work with a company that helped underprivileged kids in China do their homework but also helped them build character and life lessons. I want to bring this idea to things like Cabrini and do more than just homework with the kids. Another thing I want to bring to MISH is rather than asking the general student population to volunteer, bring community service projects to classrooms to up participation. As an international student, I also think I can add more internationally-based service projects that we otherwise wouldn’t hear about.”

Tim Kaplowitz is the male boarder representative and the head of the improv club. He said, “I think that I can be very entertaining to people in morning meeting. I want to make morning meeting a more positive experience and make students walk out of the theater more relaxed and ready for their day. I also think that my heavy involvement in executive committee has given me a great amount of experience in dealing with issues that affect the student body. I hope that this experience will help me bring change to this school next year and help executive committee grow.”

Annie Canning has been going to Masters for six years. She is also the day student representative and treasurer of GSA. In addition to those leadership positions she plays field hockey and track at Masters.

Annie said, “I think i’m really open and outgoing which will allow me to be more approachable with students. I also feel my positive attitude coupled with Timmy’s humor will allow morning meeting to be a fun experience. In addition the school co-chairs meet with the head of school once a week to discuss events in executive committee and I feel that I will be able to educate Laura Danforth about Masters traditions. I also want to put printers in the dorms so boarders don”t have to rely on the library printer.”
