For ninth-grade co-president Toby Milward ’29, the celebration of the new year is important, but, he says, “In high school, I think the new school year is a more important milestone because you’re getting back into the routine after being on summer break for three months.” Milward feels like he just finished his summer reading, but in reality, much has changed for him since then.
Milward earned the title of ninth-grade class co-president on Oct. 3, becoming the first leader of a new grade. During the elections, he explained that he decided to focus on connecting with classmates instead of overanalyzing his speech. While not a typical decision, looking back, Milward said he thinks it was an effective way to gain votes and the respect of his classmates. Connecting on a more personal, less professional level allowed him to be a genuine, strong candidate. It also helped him form new relationships with a grade that had grown significantly since his Masters Middle School graduation. “Becoming class president was a fun process for me,” Milward added.
In addition to becoming a new Executive Committee elected member, Milward is on the varsity squash team, cross country team, and plays guitar in the student performing group Walkmen.
Looking towards the holidays, Milward thinks about connecting with his grade, as well as his closest friends and family. Along with co-president Lorenzo Zapata ’29, Milward plans to organize a Secret Santa, White Elephant game, or other festive activities among the ninth-grade advisories. Milward and Zapata have also begun planning a movie night, aiming to unite students and create stronger bonds.
On a more personal level, Milward spends time with his close family on Christmas in Windham, a ski resort around two hours away from Masters. “Windham is one of my favorite places to be because of all the people there and the views of the mountains,” he explained. Spending time with his family over the holidays is Milward’s chance to slow time back down and take a break.
When he gets back, however, the class president is right back in it. “The school year always goes slowly in the moment, but it seems like it went by so quickly when you look back,” Milward said. Having been a Panther since fifth grade, Milward will be ready to get back to running, squash playing, leading, and seeing his peers. Until then, Milward tells everyone, “Happy holidays and enjoy the break!”
