The magic of film

“You know, Mr. Lesser, I’m jealous of you because your generation will not feel all of the effects of climate change.” If that was not an exact quote from class last week, it was pretty close to it and it was devastating. So, as I apparently enter my golden years I will continue to teach the younger generation about the pop culture of my youth (assuming I can still remember back that far).

Last week was music, so this week will be a movie. Over winter break I was able to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which I enjoyed a lot and is now the third highest grossing movie of all time. And while I’d like to be what you kids might call, “sassy,” and say that you should go check out this really cool movie you may not have heard of called Star Wars: A New Hope the truth is that movie came out in the 70s and contrary to popular opinion, I was not alive then. Since I cannot and will not dedicate a blog to Star Wars: The Phantom Menace I decided to go with a Sci-Fi movie that I think is really underrated, Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, which was one of two magician movies released all the way back in 2006. Why were movies about magicians in the late 19th century all the rage in 2006? No idea and it seemed weird at the time too, but I do know that The Prestige is way better than The Illusionist. I think that the less I say the better, but Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman star as rival magicians in this movie that is itself structured like a magic trick. After the first viewing you will want to go back to see what you missed the first time around. So watch it, then watch it again and let me know what you think!
