On Tuesday for Matters of Spirit, Masters welcomed Alex Rosner, a Holocaust survivor and grandfather of junior Grace Rosner, and senior Noah Rosner. Rosner, who lived in Kraków, Poland before the Second World War began, discussed being a young boy attempting to survive Auschwitz and Dachau during the 1930s and ‘40s, as well as his post-war experiences. Rosner also discussed what he thought of human nature, his perceptions of the film Schindler’s List, and what it was like to acclimate to American culture as a survivor of the Holocaust. Students responded with many questions for Rosner, ranging from whether he had hope while experiencing the Holocaust to what he thought of comparisons between Syrian refugees today and Jewish refugees in the 1940s. “I really appreciated what he had to say. It was very profound and really moving, and I liked that he had a really realistic outlook on what he went through,” said Katie Accetta, a sophomore. Rosner immediately received a standing ovation, moving the entire school.
