Understated does not always mean simplistic

The meticulous detail in Feed Me Jack’s EP “Ultra Ego” is easily passed over by the unperceptive listener. There’s not much showboating to be found anywhere in the five songs. But while the songs may seem too chilled-out and even boring to some, the real beauty of the music is revealed when you listen closely. Every layer is carefully cultivated, and meter changes sound so natural that they nearly pass the listener over.

While creating music as catchy as any tune on the radio, Feed Me Jack also maintains a high level of musicality, adding small, musically complex touches throughout their songs. The resulting sound soothes but also excites. Overall, the album feels like a blast of calming sunshine. “Ultra Ego” is a great listen for those looking for detail-oriented music that doesn’t need to explode in every direction to get your attention.

This year, the group unfortunately disbanded. They never released a full album, but they did release a series of EPs, “Ultra Ego” being their final addition.
