New copier tracks how much ink and paper each student uses

Before spring break, students would bring their papers up to the copier, place it on the upper left hand corner, press a few buttons and then have five copies. The evening before classes resumed, an email was sent to the Upper School regarding the copier. The machine now requires the user to scan their student ID in order to copy each page. The order has now become place, press, scan; place, press, scan.

In the past the school had charged students to copy pages, but Director of Technology Daniel Pereira stated that this was not his intension.

He said, “before it was kind of more about trying to generate a little bit of revenue, but I’m not interested in that. You guys do so much around here. This is a boarding school we’re trying to give back, not take away”.

Then what is this new ID scan for? According to Pereira, the ID scan is for “auditing purposes”. In other words, it will help to keep track of who is printing how much in order to avoid abuse of the copier. Additionally, keeping track of how much ink and paper each student uses will help to determine how much is needed.

In addition to the ID scan, students are now able to print and scan from their personal computers. Installing the software is a long process, Senior Deniz Bengi said, “It was fairy easy to set up, I just had to follow the instructions. But once I set it up, even though I logged in with my correct and regular username and password, it didn’t work and didn’t printing anything. So, Basically I ended up trying to set it up and to print something for 30 to 40 minutes…and in the end it didn’t work.”

However, there were a number of people who successfully connected, “One of my systems guy told me approximately 25 or 30 kids have come through and had the software installed or have already installed it and they seem to like it,” Pereira said.
