Oliver Kreeger

Oliver Kreeger, Lead Opinion Editor

Senior Oliver Kreeger has been at Masters since the 6 grade. He joined the intro to journalism class as a sophomore and joined the Tower production class as a junior. Kreeger has previously served as the News Editor and has since worked his way up the ranks to be the Lead Opinion Editor. Kreeger is best known for hosting his dance parties during layout nights.

He is a Best of SNO award-winning journalist and next year will be heading off to Kenyon College.

SCOTUS HAS SUPPORTED HOMOPHOBIC web designer Lorie Smith in her lawsuit against Colorado state civil rights law which initially prevented her from publicly prohibiting gay couples from seeking her services for wedding website design. This court ruling has a variety of implications regarding who businesses and particularly creativity/design businesses can choose to serve, and holds opposition to gay marriage as a legitimate ground to not serve a gay couple in their wedding site request.

CONCERN HAS MOUNTED RECENTLY over growing legislative activities that promote transphobia in state houses across the U.S. In some states, bills banning trans participation in sports teams aligning with their gender have gone into effect, and in others bathroom bills and bills banning the education of children regarding gender issues have also been passed. Most worrisome to advocates in many cases are bills that essentially make it illegal to identify as trans if a minor, and even as an adult make it extremely difficult to affirm your gender. Trans rights are one of the fronts of a culture war being fought by reactionaries who score political points by demonizing innocent minorities who have long been scapegoated.

CIVICS LITERACY IN AMERICA has been recorded recently as being quite low. It has been found that significant percentages of Americans cannot answer basic questions about the functioning of U.S. government and its various structures. In this piece, the author argues that Masters needs more exposure to civic education through more possible classes and the like.

JUNIOR GHARVIN RAMNARESE HAS been fencing at Masters since his time at middle school. At the time, the P.E. curriculum had them rotate through various sports and athletic activities, and Ramnarese fell in love with fencing. He has now been involved with upper school fencing for several years, and looks forward to its continued growth and what he says is a bright future.
