Avant-Garde Act tētēma Explores the Anthropocene with ‘Geocidal’

Tētēma’s ‘Geocidal’ is not meant for the faint of heart. Its dissonance and sheer noise will be off-putting for most. But, in some weird sense, the album isn’t meant to be enjoyed.

‘Geocidal’ is all about wickedness and the end of the world. Ranging from the slow, grueling 7-minute Ten Years Tricked to to the loud, manic uproar of Pure War, the album is undeniably hard to listen to. The songs are more like the soundtrack to an avant-garde horror film than normal, pedestrian music.

So, what’s the point? ‘Geocidal’, although inaccessible for most, actually has a level of genius to it. tētēma has formed something extremely original and creative with the album, combining elements of rock, electronic, jazz and avant-garde music. But what makes the album most notable is how the songs have the power to summon the most horrible, gripping emotions from within you. The primal screaming on The Hell of Now and the wild percussion on 3-2-1 Civilization are like the suitable musical accompaniments to your darkest moments. Sometimes, those moments could do with a soundtrack.
