Mrs. Hurley: Declassified

Many of you may not know this, but the science department would not run without our wonderful lab tech Rene Hurley.  Hurley quietly goes about her job, but she is more than the woman who makes sure our chemicals don’t blow up.  Who is this woman behind the scenes?  Who is the mystery lady who makes the science department run seamlessly?

Hurley is originally from Illinois.  At the age of eight she moved to Texas.  She went to high school in the town of Alvin.  For you baseball fans that is the home of Nolan Ryan.  Also, for those of you who don’t know, like any good Southerner she was taught about “The War of Northern Agression.”  Us victorious Northerners know it properly as the Civil War.

She went to college at Texas St. University and was an industrial chemist.  It was at this career that she met her husband Jeff.  In fact, he was ordered to visit her specific plant and it was at a dinner organized around his visit that Rene and Jeff met.  Even more fatefully, they were the only two guests who ended up showing up at the dinner: Mrs. Hurley and her future husband.

This is not Hurley’s first stint at a school.  For a few years she taught at a school in Mississippi.  She taught three years of Anatomy and one year of sixth grade life science.  In her anatomy class, she once almost got her school in trouble with PETA due to one of her students posting pictures of a dissection on the internet!

Hurley is the woman behind the scenes.  She makes the science department run, but she is also so much more.  For those of you who don’t know Mrs. Hurley you are missing out on a valuable and very interesting hidden member of our community.
